Members of Can-SOLVE CKD recently took part in the Gathering Our Voices Indigenous youth leadership training on the traditional territory of the Musqueam First Nation.

Patient Partner Alissa Assu and Indigenous Liaison Manager Catherine Turner attended the conference to highlight the work of Can-SOLVE CKD and raise awareness of the Kidney Check project. Kidney Check is a Can-SOLVE CKD research program that is bringing kidney, diabetes, and blood pressure checks and care to rural and remote Indigenous communities across Canada.

Catherine and Alissa spoke with youth participants and with many chaperones from First Nations and Indigenous communities about the Kidney Check project and heard personal stories of participants who had been touched by kidney disease in their families.

Gathering Our Voices, hosted by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres and its Provincial Aboriginal Youth Council, is held annually in March. The conference’s goal is to provide Indigenous youth with the tools to work towards a better tomorrow by improving themselves and the world in which they live. Over the course of four days, up to 1,500 delegates gathered from across Canada to participate in ceremonies, workshops and engaging, informative, and educational experiences.
